R to redfishstream: Over the last weeks of his life in hospital, Berkin’s weight dropped from 45kg to 16kg. Berkin died after spending 269 days in a coma. His death sparked widespread demonstrations against the Turkish justice system, which failed to issue an arrest order for the murderer.
On March 11, 2014, Berkin Elvan, a 14-year-old boy who joined the Gezi Park protests in Istanbul in 2013 to fight against injustice and for a better life, died. During the protest, Turkish police shot Berkin in the head with a tear-gas canister amid a crackdown on protesters.
