R to redfishstream: Today, the 2nd largest German party CDU (Christian Democratic Union) is requesting in parliament to melt down the Thälmann monument “because of Putin’s war” and the “Hammer and Sickle.” They say they want to donate proceeds to Ukraine.
R to redfishstream: The monument is the work of the well-known Soviet sculptor Lev Efimovich Kerbel, who was both Ukrainian and Jewish. He was one of the most decorated artists in the Soviet Union.
R to redfishstream: In memory and honor of Thälmann, a monument was built on his 100th birthday in Berlin, in 1986. The monument bears communist symbols and the greeting of the anti-fascist KPD military association – ‘Red Front!’

Ernst Thälmann was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany between 1925 and 1933. He was murdered by Hitler in 1944. Now, the second-largest party in Germany wants to destroy his monument because of “Putin’s war.”
