ミヒャエル エンデの『モモ』を読み終えた。
『モモ』というタイトルにしようかと思ったけど、今は「～～した」みたいな長めのタイトルがマナーっぽいし、「『モモ』を読んだ」だと、毎日、読んでいたのだから、毎日「『モモ』を読んだ」だわ、となって、このタイトルにした。
七月の終わり、カレンダー上の連休に合わせ会社の夏休みをくっつけた頃からだから、二か月ちょっと、付き合ってもらった。
岩波少年文庫版の物をKindleで読んだのだけど、末尾に訳者の大島かおりによる付記があり、
しかし翻訳としては、三十年という年月を経過して、いまの日本語の語彙や表現から見て、いうなればことばの賞味期限が切れかかっているように感じられる個所が散見しますし、訳者の未熟さゆえのまずい表現も気になりますので、このたび、岩波少年文庫での出版を機に、いささかの訂正を加えさせていただきました。
と書かれていて、この「ことばの賞味期限が切れかかっている」という句に村上春樹を思い出した。
僕は、数少ない翻訳ですら全部は読んでいないのだけどそれでもトム ジョーンズが好きで、村上春樹がトム ジョーンズを訳したというので『月曜日は最悪だとみんなは言うけれど』を買った。
これはアメリカ文学者のエッセイを村上春樹が集めて訳した物で1、その最後には彼自身が翻訳という物について書いたエッセイも載っている。その中で村上春樹はやはり「小説は書かれた時代も含めての言葉なので、時代が下ったからと言って書き換えられるべきとは考えないが2、翻訳の言葉というのは今読む人に届ける物だから、たまに直してアップデートする必要がある」というようなことを言っていた。
これを読んで僕は衝撃を受けたらしく、今でも度々思い出している。そして特別な考え方だと思っている。そうした中で大島かおりが（僕にとっては）不意に同じ考えに基づき翻訳を直した、とさらりと言っていて、ああ、門外漢だから特別に感じるだけで、翻訳を生業としている人には当たり前の感覚なのだなあ、と自分の傲慢を悟ったのだった。

と思っていたら、ウィキペディアによると、エッセイ以外も載っているそうだ。ごめん、トム ジョーンズと村上春樹以外は読んでない。
とまではっきり書かれていないかも知れない、僕の考えが混じっているかも知れない。手元に無いので遠い記憶を頼りに書いています。
